When fairness is called "hate" then truth is lost.
Nancy Armour’s recent USA Today article accusing Boise State’s women’s volleyball team of bigotry for refusing to compete against San Jose State reflects an increasingly reckless misuse of the term. Armour’s remarks are not only irresponsible but emblematic of a larger societal trend: the demonization of individuals and institutions that dare to uphold fairness and integrity in women’s sports.
Let’s be clear—there is no "bigotry" in standing up for biological women in women’s sports. The Cambridge Dictionary defines a bigot as “a person who has strong, unreasonable ideas, and who thinks anyone who does not have the same beliefs is wrong.” By this very definition, it appears that Nancy Armour’s own behavior might warrant the label she so freely assigns to others.
This isn’t the first time Armour has misapplied the term to vilify dissenting voices. A brief review of her body of work reveals a troubling pattern:
March 4, 2021: Legislation to preserve competitive fairness in women’s sports dismissed as "bigotry."
January 19, 2023: Tony Dungy’s Christian beliefs labeled as "bigotry" for defending traditional gender norms.
May 28, 2023: ESPN’s Sam Ponder, accused of using "fairness" to justify bigotry.
November 25, 2024: Boise State athletes refusing to play against San Jose State called bigots.
This relentless campaign to paint all opposition as hateful undermines honest debate and alienates millions who simply want fairness restored in sports.
Armour’s Contradiction: Who is the Bigot?
By accusing Boise State athletes of bigotry, Armour ignores the basic principles of competition. Women’s sports exist precisely because biological differences create an uneven playing field. The NCAA itself acknowledges the need for separate divisions for men and women. Is it truly bigotry to insist that these distinctions remain meaningful? Or is it common sense?
If fairness is now “transphobic hysteria,” as Armour claims, what term will she invent next to silence dissenters?
Armour’s argument collapses under scrutiny because it ignores a glaring fact: no biological females are competing in men’s sports. The reason? Biology matters. The undeniable advantages in strength, speed, and power that biological males possess over biological females aren’t erased by identifying as another gender.
Boise State’s Courage
The women of Boise State showed incredible resolve by forgoing a championship opportunity to make a broader statement about fairness. They understood that to play this game under protest would have been to validate the growing erosion of women’s sports.
This decision cost them dearly: a shot at victory, the chance to fulfill their dreams, and an opportunity to represent their university on the largest stage. And yet, their actions underscore an unshakable truth—women’s sports are worth protecting.
The Real Bigotry
The irony here is palpable. By labeling Boise State’s athletes as bigots, Nancy Armour reveals her own inability to tolerate differing opinions. In her worldview, advocating for fairness is hate, standing for biology is hysteria, and protecting women’s spaces is an act of intolerance.
This level of intellectual dishonesty fuels distrust in the media. It’s why nearly three-quarters of Americans no longer trust legacy outlets like USA Today. When journalists like Armour substitute activism for reporting, they betray their duty to inform and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Moving Forward
The Boise State women’s volleyball team has shown what true courage looks like. They deserve applause, not vilification. Their stand reminds us of what’s at stake—an entire generation of girls and women who risk losing the opportunities Title IX was created to protect.
This fight isn’t about hate or exclusion. It’s about fairness, integrity, and the future of women’s sports. Those who mislabel this fight as bigotry are not only wrong but complicit in the destruction of what so many have worked to build.
If Armour can’t see that, perhaps she should take her own advice and reflect on the meaning of bigotry.
