When CNN starts calling this out, you know it must be bad.
New York, NY – In an extraordinary turn of events that has the political world buzzing, CNN's senior legal analyst, and former assistant US Attorney, Elie Honig, has pulled back the curtain on what he describes as a "political hit job" against former President Donald Trump.
The judge presiding over the case reportedly donated money to a pro-Biden, anti-Trump political operation, flagrantly violating the rule prohibiting New York judges from making political donations.
Alvin Bragg, the district attorney at the center of this legal circus, proudly boasted on the campaign trail in a heavily Democrat county, "It is a fact that I have sued Trump over 100 times." One could almost hear the applause from the partisan crowd, cheering on their knight in shining armor as he took on the evil orange menace.
The DA's charges against Trump, however, seem to stretch the very limits of law and due process. "These charges push the outer boundaries of the law," said our bemused analyst. The accusations against Trump are not only obscure but nearly unprecedented. No state prosecutor in New York, Wyoming, or anywhere else has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything. Ever. It's like they dug deep into the legal archives and dusted off a rulebook written in invisible ink.
To add to the absurdity, the DA inflated misdemeanors well past their statute of limitations and "electroshocked them back to life," alleging that the falsification of business records was committed "with intent to commit another crime." However, the DA conveniently refused to specify what those unlawful means were—until right before closing arguments. So much for the constitutional obligation to provide notice to the defendant of the accusations against him in advance of trial.
Surprise, surprise! The charges against Trump aren’t just unusual—they’re bespoke, seemingly crafted individually for the former president and nobody else. It's like the legal equivalent of a custom-tailored suit, except instead of fine Italian fabric, it’s made from discarded scraps and duct tape.
The Manhattan DA’s employees reportedly call this the “Zombie Case” because of its various legal infirmities, including its bizarre charging mechanism. But it’s better characterized as the Frankenstein Case, cobbled together with ill-fitting parts into an ugly, awkward, but more-or-less functioning contraption that just might ultimately turn on its creator.
This entire spectacle has provided endless fodder for late-night comedians and political pundits alike. With every twist and turn, the Trump conviction saga unfolds more like a farcical stage play than a serious legal proceeding. It’s a drama fit for the modern era, where reality TV and politics collide in a bizarre, never-ending loop of entertainment and outrage.
